One Tiny Thing to Try to Get More (and More Detailed) Survey Responses

A single change to how you frame your ERG survey that meaningfully lifts both response rate and answer quality.

Most ERG surveys get low response rates and shallow answers for the same reason: members do not believe anyone will act on them.

The change

In the survey intro, name the specific decision the results will inform. Not "we want to hear from you" — but "we are deciding between two formats for next quarter's programming, and your answers will pick the winner."

Why it works

Members stop treating it as feedback theater and start treating it as a vote. Response rate goes up. Answer length goes up. Quality of qualitative responses goes up significantly.

Bonus move

Close the loop. When the decision is made, send a follow-up: "You picked X. Here is what we are doing because of it." That single email is what makes the next survey hit even harder.
