Every ERG program manager knows the moment: you handed out swag and a "thank you" Slack post, and the leaders still feel invisible. In Episode #8, we apply the 5 love languages framework to ERG leader appreciation — because how someone receives gratitude matters as much as that you offered it.

Why generic recognition falls flat

Most ERG appreciation programs are built around what's easy to procure, not what lands. A $25 Amazon card means very different things to different leaders — and to some, it means almost nothing at all.

The 5 ERG leader love languages

1. Words of Affirmation

A personal note from the CEO. A LinkedIn shout-out from the exec sponsor. Public acknowledgement at a town hall. Cheap, fast, and high impact for this group.

2. Quality Time

A 1:1 lunch with the exec sponsor. A skip-level coffee. Real attention from people whose attention is scarce.

3. Acts of Service

Take work off their plate. Hire a vendor for the event they've been dreading. Get them admin support for one quarter. This is the most undervalued category.

4. Gifts

The default — but make it thoughtful. A book they've mentioned. Tickets to a conference. Not a logo'd water bottle.

5. Physical Presence / Showing Up

Executives attending the ERG event. The program manager actually being in the room. Presence is recognition.

How to use this

Ask each ERG leader, at the start of their term, which two of these resonate most. Then design recognition around their answers — not yours.

Related reading

Learn How to Prevent ERG Leader Burnout in 30 Minutes

Slowing ERG Leaders Down Without Demotivating Them
