5 Ways ERGs Can Navigate Election Week Safely

Keeping your ERG Communications "very mindful, very demure" post?

A quick PSA to ERG leaders of US employees: here's what you need to do today to set your ERG up for success this election week.

1. Align with comms

Before anything kicks off, hit up your internal comms team and ask: "What guidelines are in place for political content in ERG channels? I want to make sure we're in sync."

Trust me, clear guidance upfront will save you a lot of headaches later. Very important here — you don't want company-sponsored groups to unintentionally endorse anything, and as an ERG leader, that's a fine line.

2. Post clear guidelines ASAP

After you've got the green light from comms, drop a post in your ERG channel immediately. Mention what's appropriate, what's not, and why — so no one's caught off guard. Pin it for emphasis.

3. Highlight mental health resources

Remind your members about your company's mental health support — whether that's EAP, free counseling, or maybe even taking a mental health day. For those who can't just log off (hourly workers), encourage them to talk to their manager if they need a 10-minute breather to regroup.

4. Make your ERG a space for everyone

Here's the thing: your ERG needs to be a safe space for all backgrounds and perspectives in your community. Don't let it turn into a place where only certain viewpoints are welcome. If anyone feels excluded this week, they might never come back — and that's a loss for the whole community.

5. Bring some lightness

Yes, it's a stressful week, but your ERG can be a place for positivity too. Share something fun or lighthearted that brings your members together — memes, a quick laugh, etc. A little joy can go a long way when things feel heavy. Just keep it respectful and relevant.

Three bonus tips

A few extra things to keep in your back pocket:

  • Don't leave your communications up to chance. Don't ghost your members or avoid addressing the elephant in the room. Instead, intentionally plan a post addressing the week and guiding the conversation. Silence can create confusion — lead with clarity.
  • Keep an eye on the tone. If your channel's vibe starts to shift into negativity, step in and reset the tone. A quick "Hey team, let's keep things constructive and supportive" can go a long way.
  • Lead by example. Show your members how to engage thoughtfully by doing it yourself. If you're calm, clear, and respectful, they'll follow your lead.

If there's ever a time to be very mindful, it's now. Jokes aside, what you do today can make all the difference in your members' trust that your ERG is a space for them long term.
